Gatagua Factory is run by the Gatagua Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), which brings together more than 845 small-scale farmers growing coffee at altitudes between 1,600 and 1,800 meters. The cooperative was created when three farmer groups broke away from another organization and came together to strengthen their coffee production. The name “Gatagua” comes from the Kikuyu word for “gathering,” reflecting this unity. Since teaming up with Kahawa Bora in 2019, the group has seen major improvements in both coffee quality and yield, as well as better prices for their beans. Kahawa Bora provides farmers with hands-on training and soil testing to help guide smarter, more sustainable farming practices.

Most farmers in the cooperative grow SL28 and SL34 coffee varieties, which thrive in the area thanks to their drought tolerance and strong root systems. With customized fertilizer recommendations and access to discounted bulk inputs through the co-op, farmers have seen better harvests and improved cup scores, climbing from 85 to as high as 87–88+. This partnership and focus on sustainability have truly breathed new life into coffee farming for the Gatagua community.
